Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome, aka musical duo Garfunkel and Oates, talk about their goals, their song process and “Making It.” Their Half Hour debuts tonight on Comedy Central. And they’re in Bonnaroo this weekend.

29/31 - Garfunkel and Oates

Garfunkel and Oates: The Half Hour premieres tonight at 11:30/10:30c!

makingmovieswithandy asked you:This is just for Riki: I’m a huge fan of your ‘Making It’ podcast. Could you interview more comedy directors? Also, who do you want to interview that you haven’t yet?
Thank you!  I’d love to interview more comedy directors!  I will definitely try to do that.  If I could interview anyone, it would be Jon Stewart for sure.
Anonymous asked you:Kate, how long did it take you to get comfortable swearing in your songs?
It was a gradual process over about a year.  But somehow, when you sing a curse word, it doesn’t feel as potent.
Anonymous asked you:To G&O, what would a song about Twilight sound like ?
It would be called “We’ve Never Seen This Movie” and it would sound like an up tempo lounge song and we’d wear glow-in-the-dark fangs when we sing it.
and-down-we-go asked you:Not a question at all, but I love you guys, G&O! One of my most awkward moments was telling my mom you two were hilarious…. then she promptly watched “Go Kart Racing Accidental Masturbating” and judged me pretty hardcore
Thanks!  Imagine how our parents feel.
johninnj asked you:I gotta know - a lot of your relationship songs are about kinda bummy relationships. So how much of your material is autobiographical?
All of it.  But it’s only snapshots of our lives.  They’re never about permanent situations, just how we’re feeling at that particular moment.
That’s all for this installment of Ask a Professional Comedian. Many thanks to Garfunkel & Oates for their great answers and to all of you who sent in questions! Don’t miss the premiere of Garfunkel & Oates: The Half Hour, Friday at 11:30/10:30c.

hannajames asked you:What’s the best thing about performing comedy as ladies? What’s the worst?
The best part is we get to have vaginas.  The worst part is, women aren’t funny.
Anonymous asked you:Are you working on any solo projects at the moment?
Yeah, we always write our own stuff but are mainly working together right now.
Anonymous asked you:Have either of you guys met Precious yet? If so, what’d she think of Running with Chicken?
No!   We’d love to.  Doug Benson met her during a podcast and told her about it and she seemed cool with it.
Anonymous asked you:Who would win in a fight, Garfunkel or Oates?
Oates would win because she’s a black belt in sports.  Have you seen her muscles?
icecreamlife asked you:I was wondering if you both have any long-term goals that you’re working towards currently?
We really want to make a TV show so are in the process of pitching it. Cross your fingers!!

coopcooperberg asked you:Who are your main inspirations for your comedy? And so far, what has been your favorite song you’ve done?
Our favorite song we’ve done is our new one, 29/31 because it really captures where we were at and it’s fun to sing.  Our main inspiration is probably musical theater.  We love musicals (mostly Sondheim) are constantly inspired by them.
Anonymous asked you:My boyfriend of 4 years says he doesn’t believe in marriage but wants to spend the rest of his life with me and have kids. We have a good relationship but I want to get married. I’m 28 years old. You’re video of 29/31 now has me freaked out. Should I not care about marriage, wait a year to see if he changes so that “the world is my oyster” I just don’t want to end up like the 31 year old. I’d rather be with someone I like than no one.
We’re definitely not the people you should ask, but our initial reaction is, you need to be with someone’s who’s on the same page as you and wants the same things.  If you want a husband, you should find one.
lifeofalayna asked you:Dear Garfunkel & Oates, Yall are amazing! When are you going on tour? And please let it be soon and in LA!
We’re not sure but we’d love to soon.  We played New Orleans last year and would love to come back.
heresyourhost asked you:Hey G&O! While I love your comedy, the song “As You Are” has a more serious tone to it and I think it’s beautiful. Where did that come from? Any other non-comedic gems on the way?
It was inspired by a comedian friend of ours who didn’t realize how special he was.  We hope to write more non-funny songs if inspiration strikes.  Check out “My Apartment’s Very Clean Without You” which is another non-comedy song we wrote.
Anonymous asked you:Dear Garfunkel & Oates: if your belly button was an actual button to something, what would it activate?
It would be like the Zack Morris “time out” in Saved by the Bell. Everyone would freeze and we could get things done while the world waited.  Or we could just fuck with the frozen people.
ilackscience asked you:I was wondering, when do you guys think is the latest a person should learn a musical instrument? Is there a real difference between learning at 12 and learning at 22?
The younger you are, the easier it seems to be, but you’re never too old to learn.  We love learning new things and expanding what we think it’s possible for us and we feel like anything that forces you to work hard is good for your brain.  Kate says try the ukelele because it only has four strings.

brogue asked you: Garfunkel and Oates, are there any non-musical ventures that the two of you are collaborating on?
Not so far. But hopefully! We just can’t help but break out into song around one another.
amala83 asked you: @Garfunkel and Oates: 1. I love you guys and 2. How long does it take for you to write your hilarious material?
Thank you!!  We used to do it very quickly- in a few hours.  Now it takes weeks or months to write a song.  The Handjob song took six months.
Anonymous asked you: For Garfunkel and Oates: Assuming it isn’t poor form to ask about another network, can you tell us anything about your HBO show?
We did a web series for them that’s going to be on HBO GO in July. Sadly, our TV show with them is not going forward so we hope to do one somewhere else.
Anonymous asked you: To Garfunkel (& Hall) & Oates: Whats the dumbest thing you two have ever fought over?
Whether Shawn Colvin’s “Sunny Came Home” is a good song.  Riki said no, Kate said yes.   Whether or not Kate should wear purple plaid bellbottom sweatpants on every plane ride we take.  Riki also voted no on this.
clarkandjared asked you: Garfunkel! Oates! I have been such a huge fan of yours since I first discovered your YouTube. I’m half a musical-comedy duo myself, and I’m curious: What advantages/disadvantages do you feel that being musical-comedy instead of only stand-up comedy has afforded you? Do you consider yourselves stand-up comedians?
We don’t really consider ourselves stand-ups although we love playing comedy clubs more than music venues.   The advantage is that you get to hide behind a song, the disadvantage is if a song is bombing, you can’t end it early.
Anonymous asked you: G&O: What is your writing process like? Do you start with the music or lyrics?
We usually start with an idea and then brainstorm on it.  So the lyrics definitely come first.  We shape the melody around the words and sometimes the prettiest melody isn’t the funniest and we always choose funny over musicality.
tdl asked you: Garkfunkel and Oates: Your songs are hilarious. How do your parents feel about them?
They love them.  Especially the ones about us masturbating.  But seriously, they are super supportive- we just try to not talk about any lyrics specifically with them.
