Scott Kennedy was talented, generous and brave. He made a point of performing for the troops from the very beginnings of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, going on to do so more than 50 times. He was an out gay comedian in a time when it was not at all easy to be an out gay comedian. (And often in a place where it was not at all easy to be an out gay comedian, for example in Iraq and Afghanistan, or in front of the troops.)
He died last week. I keep checking all the gay-news websites for even a mention, but so far there’s nothing. (Towleroad does link to an article in which Trevor Donovan admits to sometimes eating dinner naked, though- be sure and check that out.) I keep looking at Foxnews.com and all the sites that fall all over themselves reminding you how pro-military and patriotic they are, but so far there’s nothing. (Breitbart does run several gloating op-eds about the Obama-looking devil in Mark Burnett’s “The Bible,” so by all means read each one.)
Scott Kennedy quietly did the right thing in about a dozen different ways. Now that he’s gone, let’s do the right thing and amplify his voice. Taylor Williamson has written a beautiful post here, and included links to some video. Read it. Share it. Then go hug the fuck out of somebody.
I was so sad to hear about the loss of comedian friend Scott Kennedy. He was one of the first comics I met when I moved to Los Angeles in 2004. Even though I was only 18 years old, and I’m sure I was immature and annoying, he never made me feel like I was at the little kids table…
Sad news in the world of comedy today. Stand-up comedian Scott Kennedy passed away last week.
